Im Englischen gibt es nur zwei konjugierte Formen des Verbs to be in simple past tense. Der Infinitiv dieser Regel ist “to be“.
Mit entweder was oder were beschreibt man eigentlich Handlungen in der Zeit, in einem Platz, oder sogar einen Zustand/ das Prädikat.

Das Passiv mit “was oder were”

Was und were können auch verwendet werden, um das Passiv in der Vergangenheitsform past simple zu beschreiben, hier geht es so:
Die Form ist: was/ were + [verb p.p]
Beispiele:
1) Napoleon was defeated by the people who struggled hard.
2) They were strongly forced to tell that, though it wasn’t true.
B- [Past continuous tense]
Um das Passiv in der Vergangenheitsform past continuous zu beschreiben, gilt diese Form:
Die Form ist: was/ were + being + [verb p.p]

1) The victims were being harmed.
2) This topic was being discussed during the meeting.
In der Vergangenheitsform Past continuous tense sind was & were auch.
